dark maneuvres is a track which lives up to its name, the original expressing pumping, dark and crunchy sounds interspersed with string arrangements and overdubs which move the track in various different directions. the 1996 original is a great example of some production techniques of the time and is of interest in identifying the direction of the techno sound in that era, as well as being eminently listenable. slam were very much involved in the progression of techno at the same time as envoy was creating tracks such as dark manoeuvres and as such they have a real handle on how things have evolved, enabling them to bring a classic release such as this bang up to date. the distinctive hook, attention-grabbing melody and strings which are distinctive elements of the original are all incorporated in a full and fresh dynamic which sees some of these elements regrouped in individual sections such as the strings or moulded with deeper, darker resonance into a new expression.

after their hot contributions for treats vol. 2, session victim prove indeed that they are on the roll with a funkafied and no holds barred ep that pays homage to their hip-hop roots. move me so starts rather simply, with just a guitar and a vocal, but you can hear a moving bassline and distant rhodes chords creeping up from the background. two minutes into the track and theres still no kick drum, although the level of excitement produced by the magnetic groove is almost unbearable. a filtered drum break finally gives way to a four to the floor beat that should turn any dancefloor into a frenetic party. the track builds with high energy, as the pounding bassline seems to be directly lifted from an early 90s hip-hop classic. the breakdown sees the vocal/guitar loop being played differently until the second part shifts gear and brings more surprises in the mix with the intro rhodes chords coming in and out.

chris spero (otherwise known as uk house and techno producer glimpse) and hypercolour co-founder and producer, alex jones, return once again as dense & pika to the hotflush fold with move your body back. having crept out of the shadows back in 2011 with a collection of white labels released through their own eponymous imprint, dense & pika went on to bolster their rising profile with the release of their hotflush debut (crispy duck) which landed late last year as well as with their memorable live set at hotflushs recent boiler room takeover. there is nothing chin-strokingly complicated or needlessly over-worked about their productions. they make interesting techno aimed at the dance floor and move your body back continues with this central aesthetic. the three track ep plunders percussive depths by way of stern machine rhythms, swollen low-end grit and the echoing, anthemic elements of warehouse rave techno. the title track of the ep may already be familiar to many having appeared on their resident advisor podcast in march and is already being played out by maya jane coles, boddika and adam beyer, amongst others.

mike storm comes from the underground scene of the 072 area in the netherlands. in the late 90s he started as a dj, soon he moved from turntables to his first equipment and started performing live-sets on various local partys. while the underground scene was highly involved electro and techno music, mike learned from it’s established djs & producers and how to work with analog equipment. as of this day, he still produces his tracks still without any computer sequencer. mike storm is most of all inspired by the sound from detroit and minimal dark techno and his biggest passion is performing live on stage. in 2012 mikes coming out of the underground scene and sees his music is being appreciated by the likes of jeff mills and dimi angelis. both djs frequently use his tracks in their sets.

after a long wait slowpitch proudly returns with the third vinyl of its imprint, the label once again demonstrates great skills in collecting new collaborations and for being a good platform for emerging artists. mass digital and curly project have provided this new 4 tracks ep which includes also two great remix from denis yahsin and mirco violi, the result is a quality deep house and house pack that signs definitely an important step forward into the path of this label and its artists.

their new ep by shadow moses is maybe a style breaker leaning more towards a techno vibe with detroit roots,spanning the years between basic channel and modern love. but still in the usual quality, which means solid releases aiming on the special moments on the dancefloor and not on the charts! shadow mosess most recent 2-tracker boasts textures befitting early springtimes emotional relief: tonal warmth permeates cold, floating atmospherics, while chugging drum tracks warm up bodies...and speaker stacks. full of energy and joy with the long winter finally being over.

the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. first pressing in dark red vinyl! in remarkably short time, van bonn has developed a well-deserved reputation as a forward-thinking dub music producer. he is tying up electronic listening music with dance music structures for the german label telrae and trapez since 2011, but his newest invention van bonn01 is another step forward. van bonn records now for the first time provides him with a platform, that is his own. it is a sound laboratory pushing his ideas as well as giving him the possibility to feature like minded people. the first edition on vinyl, comes in dark red with a nice artwork. gradient (cph dub) shows a new side with van bonn, expressing a certain form of industrial & romantic privacy in a very radical way. his epic 12 minute track explores the time and space continuum in ways of symmetry. this is a perfect extension of what we know from various dub techno productions of the past. rich filtered delays balanced with a monotony of a mighty & distant beat, makes it an hypnotic piece of music. gradient in its original version is the more hardish and forceful..companion of the a-side, being more raw an direct. van bonn uses here a lot of fx sounds to build a bubble which perfectly embeds the stomping machine liked beat. the >do not resist the beat< owner milton bradley and artist on prologue (and more) has delivered a remix of >gradient< in his genuine style avoiding commercialism and creating his own atmospheric, claustrophobic, cinematic style of techno. listen here to his remix for van bonn.
